Abstract

Nurses' views on caring for children and adults during COVID-19

Year 2021, Volume: 2 Issue: 3, 122 - 127, 30.12.2021

Abstract

Aim: This study investigated during COVID-19 nurses' views on caring for children and adults.
Methods: This was a descriptive study conducted between June and August 2021. The sample consisted of 139 nurses of a public hospital. Data were collected using a “Descriptive Characteristics Questionnaire” and a “Questionnaire on Nurses' Views on Care during COVID-19”.
Results: Nurses stated that it might be easier to care for children because “children have fewer chronic diseases, develop less severe symptoms of COVID-19, die from the disease less often, and have a better clinical course”. Nurses found it easy to care for adults because there is a specific treatment protocol, and their symptoms are evident. For some, it might be harder to care for children because they "present with unclear symptoms of COVID-19 due to variants, have a vague manifestation, and do not have their parents with them during their stay in ICUs, and also because nurses have gaps in their knowledge of COVID-19 in children". Nurses added that it might be more challenging to care for adults because they have "chronic diseases, present with severe symptoms, and also because nurses need more physical power".
Conclusion: Nurses have different views on caring for children and adults with COVID-19 due to symptoms of varying severity and different clinical courses. Hospitals should train nurses on COVID-19 and develop guidelines to improve the quality of nursing care
