Knowledge Level of Surgical Nurses in Determining the Nutritional Status of Patients: The Effect of Education

Year 2023, Volume: 5 Issue: 3, 337 - 350, 25.12.2023

Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the nutrition education on the knowledge and permanence of surgical nurses in determining the nutritional status of patients.
Methods: This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design (pretest-posttest without the control group) between February and April 2022. The participants were 68 nurses working in the surgical units of auniversity hospital. Data were collected using a data collection form, a questionnaire, and training material (prepared booklet). After the pre-test, training was given and the post-test was applied, and the permanence test was carried out 21 days later. The P- value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significance.
Results: It was determined that %27.9 of the nurses had received training on the nutritional status of the patients in the past. Among them, %63.2 had received the training more than one year ago. The rate of nurses who evaluate the nutritional status of the patients was 100% in the posttest and permanence test. This rate was statistically higher than the rate of the pretest (%89,7) (p<0,01). The score of knowledge of nurses were found to be 14,38 (±5,11) in the pre-test, 24,68 (±2,71) in the post test, and 23,50 (±1,13) in the permanence test (p<0,001).
Conclusion: In the study, it was seen that the education given for nutrition increased the knowledge scores of the nurses and the increase in the knowledge level could be reflected in the clinical practice.

Cerrahi Hemşirelerinin Hastaların Beslenme Durumunu Saptamadaki Bilgi Düzeyleri: Eğitimin Etkisi

Year 2023, Volume: 5 Issue: 3, 337 - 350, 25.12.2023
