Abstract

Investigation of Nursing Students' Opinions on Birth Beliefs and Birth Preferences

Year 2023, Volume: 6 Issue: 2, 427 - 436, 01.09.2023
https://doi.org/10.38108/ouhcd.1108757

Abstract

Objective: Opinions of midwives/nurses and physicians, who have an important effect on the decision-making process and have the authority to give birth, are extremely important about the mode of delivery. Our study was conducted to determine the effect of birth beliefs of nursing students studying at the faculty of health sciences on birth preference.
Methods: The sample of the descriptive type of study was 252 nursing students. The research data were collected between November and December 2020 through a survey created and delivered to students online. For the research data were used identifying information form, questions about birth type choices and birth beliefs scale.
Results: 88.9% of the students stated that the mother and fetus health status of women affects birth preferences. In addition, it was found that there was a statistically significant difference(p<0.001) between the groups in terms of the natural process belief score of the students according to gender, class, status of taking the Women's Health Nursing Course, and the thoughts of being an internship in the field of obstetrics. A statistically significant difference(p<0.001) was found between the groups in terms of the medical process belief scores of the students according to their class and their status of taking obstetrics course.
Conclusion: It was determined that the students' opinions about birth type preferences may vary depending on gender, classes, and status of taking the course or doing the obstetrics internship. Women's Health Nursing Course curriculum should be given importance for nursing students to have sufficient knowledge and experience about childbirth.
