The research was conducted in a descriptive design to assess the perspective of nurses towards obese patients and their care. The sample of the study consisted of 215 volunteer nurses who took care of obese patients receiving inpatient care and treatment at a university hospital for at least one day between 1 June 2017 and 30 July 2017. The research data were collected a Personal Information Form. The data were evaluated the percentage calculations and the Chi-square significance test were used in data analysis. 65.6% of the nurses are in age range of 20-30 years, 68.8% are women, 76.3% have bachelor’s degree, 45.1% are working in profession between 0-5 years. 21.39% of the nurses regarded obese patients as gluttons, 20.46% said these patients were pretty, 54.9% wanted to give obesity care, but 68.8% said they would not give priority for these patients if they had a choice. More than half of the nurses stated that the age of obese patients (63.3%) and their consciousness (53.5%) had no effect on their desire for care giving, and 73.3% of nurses who thought otherwise noted that they were more willing to care for conscious patients. 91.6% of the nurses stated they have difficulty while caring obese patients, 73.5% while giving emergency intervention for obese patients, 23.7% while positioning the patient in bed, and 20.55% while trying to prevent the formation of bedsore. In accordance with the research findings, it can be said that nurses do not make discriminations between patients while giving professional care, and do not want to give care to obese patients because of the difficulties they have experienced.

Hemşirelerin %65.6’sı 20-30 yaş aralığında, %68.8’i kadın, %76.3’ü lisans mezunu, %45.1’inin meslekte çalışma yılı 0-5 yıldır. Hemşirelerin %21.39’u obez hastaları obur bireyler olarak düşündüğünü, %20.46’sı bu hastaları sevimli bulduğunu, %54.9’u obez hastalara bakım vermek istediğini ancak %68.8’i seçim şansı olma durumunda bu hastalara öncelik vermeyeceğini belirtmiştir. Hemşirelerin yarıdan fazlası obez hastanın yaşı (%63.3) ve bilinç durumunun (%53.5) bakım verme istekleri üzerinde etkisinin olmadığını belirtmiş olup, etkisinin olduğunu düşünen hemşirelerin %73.3’ü ise bilinci açık hastaya bakımda daha istekli olduklarını belirtmiştir. Hemşirelerin %91.6’sı genel olarak obez hastalara bakım verirken, 73.5’i obez hastalara acil müdahalede bulunurken ve %23.7’si hastaya en çok yatak içinde pozisyon verirken, %20.55’i bası yarası oluşumunu engellemeye çalışırken zorlandıklarını ifade etmiştir. Hemşirelerin profesyonel anlamda bakım verirken hasta ayırımı yapmadıkları, yaşadıkları zorluklar nedeniyle obez hastalara bakım vermede çok istekli olmadıkları söylenebilir.
