Introduction and aim: The application of first aid in emergency situations such as accidents and injuries provides a great advantage against mortality and morbidity. It is expected that the first aid knowledge and awareness of the society and especially those involved in the provision of health services will be high. In this study, it was aimed to determine the first aid awareness and altruism levels of students receiving health education, as well as to compare these variables according to sociodemographic characteristics.
Materials and methods: This descriptive study was conducted with students of the vocational school of health at a foundation university in Ankara. 543 students participated in the study and the participation rate is 49.7%. Sociodemographic characteristics form, First Aid Awareness Scale and Altruism Scale were used as data collection tools. The analysis of the research data was carried out with SPSS 23.0 statistical program.
Results: The age range of the participants in our study was (18-35 years) and the mean age was 20.17±2.23. It was found that 67.7% of the participants were women, 65.7% took first aid lessons and 5.6% had a first aid certificate. It was found that students scored (2.35±1.1) points for first aid awareness and (63.3±4.5) points for altruism.
Conclusion: It was found that students' altruism levels were high and first aid awareness was low. It was determined that women, those who took first aid lessons and those who had first aid certificate had higher first aid awareness. Women have higher levels of altruism than men. It was concluded that there is a positive and significant relationship between first aid awareness and altruism, and altruism is a low predictor of first aid awareness and explains 3% of it. First aid training should be made more effective and update training should be planned.
