Year 2023, , 46 - 50, 30.04.2023
https://doi.org/10.51754/cusbed.1265106

Abstract

The Evaluation of Young People's Perception of Breast Milk and Breastfeeding

Year 2023, , 46 - 50, 30.04.2023
https://doi.org/10.51754/cusbed.1265106

Abstract

Young people are key stakeholders in health education programs on “breast milk / breastfeeding”. This study was conducted to evaluate the perception of breast milk and breastfeeding in young people’s. This descriptive study was conducted in two cities and two different universities in these cities. In the first of the determined universities, a department with a course related to "Breast milk and Breastfeeding" in their curriculum; a department that did not have any course in the same scope in the curriculum of the other university was determined by randomization. The sample of the study consisted of 381 volunteer participiants studying in these two departments. Data were collected using the Personel Information Form and the Breast Milk Perception Scale. The mean age of the participiants is 20.95±1.60, 50.9% of them took course / training related to "Breast milk and Breastfeeding", 49.1% did not take any course / training. The participiants’ scale total score mean is 61.82±15.86 (min:30, max:150). In our study, the breast milk perception scores of the participiants who took courses / training related to breast milk and breastfeeding within the scope of their curriculum were found to be high. The breast milk perception scores of the female participiants were higher than the male, the participiants whose mother's education level was at secondary school and above were higher than those whose mother's education level was primary school or below, and the students who defined their income status as "high level" had higher breast milk perception scores than those who defined their income status as "low/medium level" (p<0.05). No statistically significant correlation was found between the age of the participiants and the scale total score mean (p>0.05). Health education and counseling services related to breast milk and breastfeeding should be expanded to include not only women but also individuals from all walks of life and all ages. Health professionals should strive to increase the awareness and knowledge level of young people, who are considered to be the parents of the future.
