Abstract

The Relationship Between The Attachment Status of The Fathers Whose Babies in The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Self Perception of Parental Role

Year 2022, Volume: 7 Issue: 1, 17 - 23, 30.04.2022

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the relationship between the attachment status of fathers whose babies are hospitalized in the neonatal intensive care unit and the self-perception of the parental role. The research is of a cross-sectional descriptive type. The population of the study was formed by the fathers whose babies were hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Service of a State Hospital in Sivas between 01.02.2019 and 30.07.2019. Sampling selection was not made, all fathers were tried to be reached. 176 fathers who met the sampling criteria formed the sample. The data were collected using the Personal Information Form, Paternal-Infant Attachment Scale (PIAS) and Self-perception of Parental Scale (SPPR). The average age of the fathers is 30.99±5.46. 38.6% of the fathers are primary school graduates and 47.2% had their first baby. Total PIAS score average was 77.8±8.10. SPPR scale subscale mean scores were 14.9±2.78; role satisfaction 12.4±2.84; investment 11.9±2.68; role balancing is 15.4±2.68. A weak negative correlation was found between "patience and tolerance", one of the sub-dimensions of the PIAS, and "investment", one of the sub-dimensions of the SPPR, and between the "pleasure in interaction" and "love and pride" sub-dimensions and investment (p<0.01). There was no significant difference between the sub-dimensions of the PIAS and the other sub-dimensions of the SPPR scale (competence, role satisfaction, role balancing) (p> 0.01). As the score the fathers got from the attachment scale increases, the investment sub-dimension score of the SPPR scale decreases, while the competence, role satisfaction and role balancing sub-dimensions are not affected. In this process, midwifery care should be planned for fathers to develop father-infant attachment and self-perception regarding the parental role.
